Unraveling the Mind-Body Connection: Trauma’s Role in Functional Neurological Disorder
Functional neurological disorder, or FND, is a commonly misunderstood neuropsychiatric condition characterized by abnormalities in movement, sensation, and perception. The disorder is heterogenous and can manifest as a variety of symptoms including abnormal movement, weakness or paralysis, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, changes in speech, attacks or seizures, abnormal sensation, sensory changes, cognitive problems, or any combination of above. While not all people with FND have histories of trauma, and not all people with trauma have functional symptoms, trauma histories and symptoms contribute to these symptoms and are important to include in the case formulation. In addition, medical trauma and iatrogenic harm, by products of having FND, are important contributors and should be considered in treatment.
