Recognizing Traumatic Dissociation in Clinical Practice

General clinical practices have seen a rather dramatic increase in clients either presenting with issues related to traumatic experiences or discovering traumatic sequelae during the course of treatment. Frequently, post-traumatic symptoms do not achieve the threshold of PTSD diagnosis, especially in those people suffering from persistent early developmental abuse. When such dissociative dynamics exist, they are often not recognized by the client either, and in fact, are fearfully avoided. Without a template or language to identify such underlying processes, they are often missed by the clinician or misidentified. Misdiagnoses of Bipolar, Schizoaffective, Borderline Personality, Conversion, among other disorders are frequently seen in such people.
